Types of Primers
We are able to apply all types of solvent based primers that are
suitable for automatic use including:
- Zinc Silicates - suitable for shipbuilding, off-shore rigs and storage tanks and
is suitable for immersion in water.
These primers have weld through properties developed for mig-welding - only if applied
at the stated dft (normally 15 microns +/- 3 microns). We have been applying primers
to these tolerances and supplying the shipyards for many years.
NB: Weld through properties can only be maintained if paint is applied using
a fully automatic painting facility.
The following is a list of the more popular paints that we stock:-
- Interplate 937, Interplate 855
- Hempels 1589 & Hempels 1528
Colours are normally available in Red and Grey; some paints are available
in other colours.
Other paints are available on request.
Data sheets for these paints are available on request.
We work closely with most major paint manufactures including International Paints,
Hempels, WJ Leigh, Sigma Coatings, Jotun Paints, Ameron Coatings and Willams
Casco and benefit from their technical services.
Zinc Phosphate
Advantages
- Prevention/slowing of rust.
- Creep.
- Can be made in quick drying versions.
- Inhibits oxidizing elements from reaching the surface.
- Less surface critical (can be applied down to prepared areas etc for maintenance etc).
- Easy to apply.
- Quick recoat intervals.
Disadvantages
- No barrier protection.
- Not suitable for immersion in water (generally), some variants are only if over-coated with suitable anti corrosion system.
- For medium to long-term protection in medium to severe environments a topcoat is required.
Zinc Silicate
Advantages
- A barrier is formed through weathering that becomes almost impregnable.
- Anodic effect inhibits rusting.
- Galvanic effect prevents rusting.
- Self repair of mechanical damage.
- Where aesthetic properties are of less importance no topcoat is required even for longer-term protection.
- Suitable for service temperatures of up to 400-500° (depending on product).
Disadvantages
- Only available in zinc colours (grey with slight variants with hints of red, green or blue).
- Surface preparation is critical minimum SA 2.5 ISO 8501-1:1988.
- Care must be taken when over coating, as the porous surface will lead to "popping" in subsequent coat.
